Murrieta, Riverside County
Murrieta takes its name from Juan Murrieta, a Basque rancher who brought sheep to the valley in 1873. Hot mineral springs on the east side of town became a resort in 1902 and drew visitors by train for decades. After long use as a conference center and college campus, the springs reopened to the public as a resort in 2024.
